Who Receives Your Zakat? The Eight Categories

Allah has specified exactly who may receive Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60). Learn about the eight categories and who qualifies.

Allah ‘azza wa jall has specified exactly who may receive Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60). These eight categories (asnaf) ensure your Zakat reaches those genuinely in need.

1. Al-Fuqara (The Poor)

Those who have almost nothing and struggle to meet basic needs.

2. Al-Masakin (The Needy)

Those whose income falls short of covering essential expenses, though they may have some resources.

3. Al-Amileen (Zakat Administrators)

Those who work to collect, manage, and distribute Zakat properly.

4. Al-Muallafatu Qulubuhum (Hearts to Be Reconciled)

New Muslims or those whose hearts are being softened toward Islam.

5. Ar-Riqab (Those in Bondage)

Historically, slaves seeking freedom; in modern context, those trapped in debt or exploitation.

6. Al-Gharimeen (The Debt-Burdened)

Those overwhelmed by legitimate debts they cannot repay.

7. Fi Sabilillah (In the Path of Allah)

Those working for Islamic causes, including education, dawah, and community welfare.

8. Ibn As-Sabeel (The Stranded Traveler)

Those cut off from resources while traveling, needing assistance to return home or reach their destination.

Can You Give Zakat to Family?

This is an important question with clear guidelines:

PermissibleExtended family members (siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws) who qualify under the eight categories.
Not PermissibleThose you are financially obligated to support — your spouse, children, parents, and grandparents.

The Wisdom: Zakat is not meant to replace your basic family responsibilities; it redistributes wealth beyond your immediate dependents.
